Our Harris Tweed caps in particular, are as popular with the gentlemen as they are with the ladies. How & where you wear them is of course, entirely up to you.
But before making a purchase of a cap or a bonnet, we suggest you check the size of your head or indeed the person to whom you might be gifting one to. We have a more detailed explanation of how to do this at the bottom of this page as well as a size guide for different countries.
How to measure your head to find the correct size for head wear
Method 1
Measuring for your head size is both an art and a science. You can use a tape measure or a length of string that you will then have to compare against a tape measure to determine the length.
Place the string or tape around your head about 3 mm (1/8") above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly.
Essentially, you need to measure your head exactly where the hat will sit so if you intend to wear it cocked, you might wish to measure the length around where the hat will actually contact your head, rather than just horizontally around the head, just above the ears. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
Method 2
Another valid method to determine hat size is to try on a hat and check the size. If you don't own a hat, then try on a random hat next time you are visiting a shop that stocks hats.
Sizes, even though they do vary depending on the hat maker, are technically universal. You may refer to the sizing chart below if you need to convert a medium to an actual hat size.
Tips
Small is around 55 cm (21-3/4")
Medium is around 57 cm (22-2/5")
Large is around 59 cm (23-1/5")
X-Large is around 61 cm (24")
2X-Large is usually around 63 cm (24-3/4")
If you fall in between these sizes, you may want to consider wearing a sweat band.
